Cory Arcangel reconstructs Arnold Schönberg’s Drei Klavierstücke (1909) with the help of videos of piano-playing cats. Using the free Comparisonics software, which identifies similar sounds within an audio file, he compared the cat soundtracks note for note with Glenn Gould’s recording of the Drei Klavierstücke. The best correspondences were selected for the “score” of the single-channel video.
The artist, programmer, web designer and performer uses the Internet as the source of material for many of his digital works – in this case, 170 amateur videos from youtube.com. The World Wide Web is also the destination of this copy & paste art. The Drei Klavierstücke op.11 can be found on YouTube along with Arcangel’s Paganini’s 5th Caprice (2011) composed using video samples of electric guitars.
