deaf consists of four pitch tuners in foot-pedal form whose LED displays together spell out the notes D, E, A, and F in fluorescent letters. The tuners are linked with each other in a closed circuit and translate the temporal dimension of tuning (and temporary illumination) into an LED-track animation.
In deaf, a constellation of sounds becomes a word, reversing the old procedure of translating names into musical motifs. This occurs while alluding to an action that normally precedes music-making: the act of tuning. Via spelling out being-unable-to-hear, it highlights the relationship between visual perception and acoustic imagination.
